Homebrew Favourites

Posted by Klarth

Alright, to replace the "Essential Homebrew" thread, I'm going to compile a list of all the homebrew I think's worth checking out. There's quite a lot, so I'll divide it up a little.

People with a higher firmware than 1.50 will need eLoader. The latest release is Bock. You will need GTA: Liberty City Stories and eLoader if you wish to run homebrew on your 2.01, 2.50 or 2.60 PSP. None of these programs will run on your 2.70 PSP. If you wish to keep your homebrew functionality, don't upgrade your firmware!

Emulators
Run games from older systems on your PSP. I will not tell you where to get roms - Just use Google.

Daedelus R3
Firmware requirement: 1.50, 2.XX
Daedelus is a Nintendo 64 emulator for PSP. It's very new, and still pretty slow, so it's more of a curiosity than an actual, functional emulator. Saves and sound are not supported. It supports roms in .v64 and .z64 format.

PSPCAP32 1.0.6
Firmware requirement: 1.50, 2.XX
For Amstrad CPC lovers, here's an emulator for CPC464, CPC664, and CPC6128. It runs at full speed and the controls are fully configurable to your liking.

PSPectrum 0.2
Firmware requirement: 1.50
A ZX Spectrum emulator which supports sound, screenshots and zipped roms. Runs 90% of the Spectrum's game library. It's coded from scratch rather than being a port of an existing PC emulator.

e[mulator] Beta 5
Firmware requirement: 1.50, 2.XX
This is a Wonderswan Color emulator. Some games have a slight speed problem, and others have sound problems. The gameplay is smooth on most games, though - The only major thing missing is save support.

NesterJ 1.20 Alpha - Klarth's Choice!
Firmware requirement: 1.50, 2.XX
A full-speed, fully-functional NES emulator for PSP. It even supports Famicom Disk System images. WiFi multiplayer has been implemented in the latest version!

DGEN 1.4
Firmware requirement: 1.50
DGEN is currently the best Sega Genesis / Megadrive emulator for PSP. It originally used the IRDA port for multiplayer, but the latest version supports multiplayer by WiFi.

NeoGeo CDZ Emulator 0.3.1
Firmware requirement: 1.50
This is an emulator for the old, expensive NeoGeo CD console. It runs at a very decent speed (Metal Slug looks great on a small screen!), but you'll need a large memory stick for the games.

Homer's RIN 3.2
Firmware requirement: 1.50, 2.XX
Probably the best Game Boy Color emulator out there right now. It runs GB and GBC games at full speed.

ScummVM 0.8.2 - Klarth's Choice!
Firmware requirement: 1.50, 2.XX
LucasArts published a large number of point-and-click adventure games under the ScummVM engine. These include Sam & Max Hit The Road, Monkey Island 3 and Beneath A Steel Sky - all classics, and they look amazing on such a small screen.

Snes9x TYL 0.3 - Klarth's Choice!
Firmware requirement: Click here for the 1.50 version, and click here for the 2.XX version.
Best SNES emu available for PSP - no contest. It runs most of the Super Nintendo's library at full speed without hitches nor glitches. It does, however, struggle with Mode 7 games like Mario Kart and F-Zero.

C64 0.3
Firmware requirement: 1.50, 2.XX
Emulates the sound of the SiD chip almost flawlessly - This alone warrants a download. No need to clock your PSP to 333Mhz - It's that good.

Hacks
These do all kinds of things, such as customising your firmware or allowing your 1.50 PSP to run games which require 2.XX firmware.

X-Flash 9 - Klarth's Choice!
Firmware requirement: 1.50
Excellent new program on the scene - It allows you to rename your Game directory, it lets you disable the "network update" feature so your halfwit cousins don't upgrade your PSP when you're not looking, and among other things, it lets you change the font of your XMB.

GTA: Liberty City Stories CheatDevice 1.0c
Firmware requirement: 2.XX
Essential for people who've finished GTA and need something fun to do. This lets you have low gravity, cars with monster truck wheels, invincibility, flight and much more. It even lets you build your own scenery in the newer releases.

No-kxploit Patcher
Firmware requirement: 1.50
Not really a patcher. After loading this, until the next time you shut your PSP down, you can load homebrew on a 1.50 despite only having one non-kxploit-patched folder on your memory stick.

Flashmod 3.01 - Klarth's Choice!
Firmware requirement: 1.50
This very nice utility lets you install custom fonts, remove the wavey-lines effect from the XMB, install custom backgrounds and much more. The interface is highly intuitive and simple.

Genesis UMD Launcher 2.6
RunUMD 0.01.01a1 - Klarth's Choice!
MPH Gameloader 1.1
Firmware requirement: 1.50
These launchers let you run games which require a higher firmware on your 1.50 PSP, thus allowing you to retain all your precious homebrew. Be happy.

MPH Firmware Launcher 1.4.0
Firmware requirement: 1.50
After you decrypt a firmware update EBOOT.PBP, you can place it on the memory stick and actually launch a higher firmware! This allows you to run features like the web browser and the locationfree player without actually updating your PSP. Nifty! However, it isn't the most stable thing in the world, and most games don't launch well through it.

Homebrew Applications
This section comes when I can be bothered to write it.

i run this site using my psp browser. is there any way to increase internal memory? and know any place to get a free downgrade? ooor any 1 of those u can save without a mem. stick?

Posted by Klarth

No way to increase the PSP's memory, qj.net has downgraders for firmwares 2.00 through to 2.60, you need a memory stick to save anything.

Okay, I threw that NES emulator you listed up there onto my PSP, and I was rockin Marble Madness and Zelda and it was all good... and then when I went to play some SNES games, I realized that they don't show up anymore when I open up the SNES emulator you listed above. When I was organizing my NES roms I changed the name of my SNES roms folder from "ROMS" to "SNES ROMS," and tried changing it back to "ROMS" after realizing that I couldn't find them, but it did no good. Note: I can see them when browsing my PSP on my computer, I just can't see them to open them while running the SNES emulator. Also, I tried moving the folder into GAME, but that didn't do anything. :/

If you know what happened or could help me out, that'd be great. Next I'll try deleting the NES emulator and games and checking again.

edit: Nope, that didn't do anything. I still can't play my SNES games... They're definitely still there, taking up space, I just can't see nor access them.

edit2: Alright, I fixed it! I just deleted my ROM folder off my PSP and put it back on. And thank *** my save states are still in working order. So... do you know a way I can get both the SNES and NES emulators to run?

Posted by Klarth

Yeah. Have a single directory with all the roms you want (both NES and SNES) and keep them all in there - You can change the directory you want to load them from. :P In the rom selection menu, just navigate to the top and there should be something like an option reading "/.." at the beginning of the list - This is the "go up a folder" button, pretty much.

Posted by Slade

Eh... I know I can put the roms anywhere and still find them, but for some reason they weren't showing up anywhere on my PSP when I was in the SNES emulator looking for them. This only happened after I put the NES emulator and some NES roms on there. I guess I'll try putting all my roms into one folder like you said. Meh, I'll do it again later.

ONE MORE QUESTION(yay):
That RunUMD hack... does it really let me play any PSP game no matter what version I'm supposed to have to play it?

Posted by Klarth

To be honest you shouldn't really bother with RunUMD anymore since it doesn't have a 100% success rate... I'll upload a full copy of Devhook later, which actually lets you execute firmware 2.71 as an app from the memory stick without upgrading. You need 1.50 to run it, though.

Posted by Slade

Okay, cool that'd be much appreciated. I might even sleep with yo-GIVE YOU SOME REP.

So that'd be 100% successful, right, with games that require any version 2.71 or less?
You need 1.50 to run it, though.
Nigga please. I was born with 1.50.

Posted by Klarth
So that'd be 100% successful, right, with games that require any version 2.71 or less?
Yup. Uploading right now...

Posted by Slade

So... where is it?

lol

So, I heard something about being able to play PS1 games on the PSP without emulators, or something, because PS1 software is built into it or...something. How does this work? I would really, really love MGS1 on my PSP.

Posted by Foster

If your lookin for homebrew i have a **** load on y site... check my sig for link to my site..(the homebrew will be under playstation portable/downloads/Homebrew

Posted by maian

Ok, so for all you PSP moddan people, if you want a good emulator, download gpSP. I regret that I don't have the link to it, but that's what it's called. :cookie: Basically, it's a phenomenal GBA emulator. I've rarely had any problems with it at all, ever. There's the occasional game that just won't work, but 98% of the games I've used on it work, and they work good. Every game that works, (which is pretty much every game) works flawlessly. Identical framerate, no sound issues, and it has a very quick, as in, about one second time to do a savestate.

It rocks. Just throwing that out there. And if anyone is looking for GBA ROMs, www.shadyroms.com has pretty much everything. Thanks to Borealis for that one.

Quoting maian: Thanks to Borealis for that one.

You're welcome. I think there's also some hacked versions in there, but I don't bother.

I really want to start stuffing my PSP with as much stuff as I can, including gpSP. Given, I eventually find the time and money to purchase a new, larger memory chip. I am piss broke.

Posted by maian

How big is your current one? All I have is a 512MB.

Posted by Borealis

32MB, I would have gotten a 1GIG from when I bought it, but I didn't buy it, it was given to me lol

:(

Posted by muffla

i really liked the quake homebrew because i loved the original games by id, quake doom and wolfnstien

Posted by Zelda_Guy

Hey I thought you were not allowed to post rom sites??? Anyways get Daeledus ( I think thats how you spell it) Its the best N64 emulator for the PSP!
