Well, I expected it. At least they're not being QUITE as vague about the launch date anymore.

Cool, more time for me to scrounge up some monies.

Weaker integer performance.
Weaker GPU.

Releasing 9 months later than promised.

GOOOOOOOO SONY.

Sony is trying to cover up there mistakes and they're trying to keep gamers' minds off the ps3 until they are ready to released by starting a "rumor" about a new psp with a camera...and something else (I forgot :()

I'm curious about this lawsuit. :link:?

It's the Dualshock 2 one from way back, I think.

Quoting Zeta: I'm curious about this lawsuit. :link:?

Something to do with the rumble feature of the DualShock 2, as far as i can recall.

Posted by Shade

Whole thing's f*cking bullfeathers.

Shade: Don't steal my word.

And the lawsuit: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6145853.html

As for my opinion: NO WAI! Obviously this was going to happen. Even developers were complaining about how a spring launch was impossible. Watch this royally **** Nintendo though.

Posted by Zeta

Huh, that's interesting.

I was gonna guess Jacko was sueing them 'cause kids could use the rumble as a vibrator.

I've used it long before I even heard(read) you say(type) it.

The whole lawsuit thing is stupid, Sony's been using the rumble tech. for years, and they decide to bring it up now? Fags.

Okay okay, compromise. You get custody on the forum, and I in real life.

Or, we could just be like,

"Aw, cool man, cool."

Not quite. According to the latest isue of EGM, Sony is starting to take tips/copy from Xbox Live, including the addition of achievements, which was the one thing I love most about the 360. Not surprising, since Sony has been making polls for months to everyone they can about what online structure we'd like to see for the PS3.

Bullfeathers was used in a Dilbert strip once. Did Scott Adams steal it, too?

Though I feel your pain. How dare Nickelodeon steal "Gak Splat" and name their toy after it...

Unless you're a massive SCE fan, PS3 has sod all. Most of it's support comes from 3rd parties.

Most of its games might come from 3rd parties, but Sony has the best 3rd part support in the industry.

XBOX/360 has maybe 2 killer games for it - Halo and PGR

PS3 will have MGS, GTA, GT,FF(might be multi)

I know which ones i'd rather be playing, especially since PCs do FPS much better anyway ^.^

Quoting Speedfreak: Hmm, that sounds familiar, where have I heard that before?

"PS2 will lead the broadband revolution" - Ken Kuturagi

The information is found on EGM and doesn't come from Sony, but from a group of developers.

And, to your other comment, it's a little archaic these days to think a console from Sony is only worth buying for its third-party games. In this generation Sony has set itself as a prime first-party publisher, releasing games from different genres that have been well received by the public, the media and even the game design and development community. It's just as believable now to see someone buying a Sony console just to get the next Ratchet, Jak, Sly, Kratos, Ape Escape or Ico/Shadow of the Colossus-like game as there is a guy getting a Nintendo system just for Mario, Zelda, Samus, etc.

Posted by Speedfreak

Oh yeah, because they bought out all those development studios.

Still, it's worth mentioning because there are still a lot of people out there that think Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy are owned by Sony.

Posted by Prince Shondronai

Speedfreak, you know full well that once sony has an example from a quality company, they can make it work for them. Do you think the ps2 would have had even as little power as it did without the N64 and Dreamcast to show them where 3D gaming was heading? Not to mention analog sticks and the rumble feature. Online gaming is sure to be sony's next big theft. Their userbase doesn't really care about it when Microsoft makes it, but as soon as the sony logo is all over the service, they'll think it's the greatest and most original thing since bread sliced diagonally.

Posted by Speedfreak

Did everyone's Sony-bullshit-detectors stop working today?

What about Nintendo continually pushing back Twilight Princess? Practically the same thing.

Posted by Klarth

Yeah, except they're actually improving the game and not concentrating on marketing bullshit.

Posted by Shade

Sony could be improving the system and be allowing developers more time to improve the launch titles. Maybe make some games out at launch that originally wouldn't have made it.

Posted by Klarth

Except that's not what they're doing, silly. It's Sony. Sooooony.

Posted by Shade

So? Soooooooo?

But it does give developers more time, whether that Sony's intent or not.

Posted by Klarth

Yes, more PRODUCTIVE, VALUABLE TIME in which they twiddle their thumbs waiting for launch and get paid for it!

Posted by Shade

[quote=sony hating jack]PRODUCTIVE, VALUABLE TIME

Exactly! :)

Posted by Klarth

...Carry on reading past that point, please.

And I think the fact that I own a PSP kinda disqualifies me from the "sony hating" front.

Posted by Speedfreak

Oh smeg off, delaying a game is completely different to saying a system will have a global launch and then not letting parts of the world get it until almost a year afterwards. For the record, Nintendo delayed Zelda once, idiots just assumed that the earliest possible time it could release was the actual release date.

On top of that, Sony was blatently bullshitting all along about their spring release date. We've had numerous comments from tons of developers saying that there's no way it will release in spring, it was just an attempt to dampen the Xbox 360s launch. It's not like Nintendo could do the same thing to other game launches by delaying Zelda.

Posted by Big Boss

Quoting Speedfreak: Oh yeah, because they bought out all those development studios.

How do you think a non-gaming company that wants to get in the gaming business goes about making first-party games? Make their electronics people learn how to do it, or just hire people that already know how? Sony began building their game development branch by hiring teams and individual game makers. There's nothing wrong with that, and that's pretty much how any publisher starts, or did Nintendo breed its own game engineers and designers from scratch?

Posted by Shade

Their factory has a 1 month period of pregnancy before giving birth to another individual who's born with an extensive knowledge of developing games.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Quoted post: Sony could be improving the system and be allowing developers more time to improve the launch titles. Maybe make some games out at launch that originally wouldn't have made it.

They delayed it due to Blu-Ray problems. Sure it'll give developers time to finish their games, but that wasn't the reason. Unlike Nintendo who delayed TP to polish the game up. There IS a difference.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

Yeah, exactly. It's a problem with BluRay copyright protection - the apparently copy-proof disc!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4807858.stm

As to what this could mean for Nintendo - well, uh. If they get it out in the US a decent about of time before PS3 - two or three months, let's say, even though developers will be working like champions to get the launch titles out - it could effectively kill Sony as a whole. Many, many people who were saving for a PS3 will just plump for a Revo instead due to the price, or just say 'buggrit' and get a 360 because of the year-long delay (a much more likely scenario).

I know that Rev will probably launch November-time, too, because Nintendo aren't really trying to kill people off. But it could be a huge turning point.

Posted by Shade

Eh, the only way I'll buy a Rev before a PS3 is if there's a new Golden Sun as a launch title.

Which isn't gonna happen.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

Well, if the Rev does launch early, it's quite possible that you'll be able to save up what it cost you in the time between Rev and PS3 anyway, and get both.

Not to mention, with the money for the PS3, you could get a Rev and five games.

Posted by Shade

Does the Rev even have any announced launch titles?

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Quoted post: Does the Rev even have any announced launch titles?

SSB is all you need.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

Smash Bros. is all that's solid, as far as I can remember. Everything else is not being commented on because it's 'rumours and speculation'.

I'm fairly sure we'll see a Wario Ware, though, and an FPS of come sort. Probably an EA Sports title or two.

Anyway. PS3 talk!

Posted by Axis

Well this is a huge advantage for the 360 sales wise, many people will jump ship and get straight to the gaming without the wait. Also, 360 titles will probably look way better than PS3 launch titles because developers have had more time with the 360 and experience with the 360.

As for the Revolution, Super Smash Brothers alone is worth buying it for me.

Quoting Vampiro: SSB is all you need.

Unreal Tournament owns SSB, and DMC4 would be a reeeeal nice launch title too.

As long as they get it out in time for the christmas market, they're guarenteed to sell out.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Kinda like every big console.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

Any Sony console is guaranteed to sell out. Sony deliberately withhold stock to create hype because it's the latest 'must-have' item that no-one can get.

I'm sure some lucky fellow will be able to buy mine on eBay, for a good price of course. :)

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

****! You have the best ideas.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

I'm just going to do what I did with my 360. Get a pre-order, and sell the slip for 200-300 bucks. Easy cash

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

...you have even better ideas.

Who did you sell it to? eBay, or what?

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Quoted post: Who did you sell it to? eBay, or what?

Just some stupid kid waiting in front of our shop. There was a whole bunch of them even though they knew you needed a pre-order. I saw some other kid doing what I did, so I figured I would give it a shot. There was at least ten kids begging me to sell them the slip. It was awesome.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

Oh, I see. I wonder if that would work here.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

It will. If there's a big enough demand for it (which there will be) kids WILL buy a slip. Turns out, many, many people did what I did.

It's even better when you get a ticket at a store who doesn't do pre-orders. The money you make is ALL profit.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

Might have to do this. I'll be queueing up (hopefully first) on Revolution launch day, so if it launches first I'll gauge how many people will turn up for PS3. I know at the 360 launch there weren't a huge amount of people - maybe twenty or so. DS was only me and two other guys, although that was in my fairly small hometown.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Simple solution, go to your nearest big city. If I had a small town with low demand, I'd head over to Toronto, since you know there will be tons of people. Sure you gotta pay for gas, but you'll make more than you would in two weeks with a regular job.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

I'm in a big city now. The DS launch was the only one I was in my tiny town for.

Funny you should say that, because most of Nintendo's oldest software designers actually started out as hardware engineers. Many game developers (especially in the west) today started as programmers, as they were often tasked with designing the entire game themselves anyway.

I didn't actually mean anything by what I said, anyway. I was just kinda pointing out the obvious.

Posted by WILLETH FOR MONTHS

Quoting Speedfreak: Many game developers (especially in the west) today started as programmers,

I'd like to add that my gaming course is supposed to be an all-rounder to get you started in the industry, and not specialise in too much - even so, three of the four technical modules are programming-based or have an element of programming (out of six modules, two are business and soft skills). It's a much bigger part of the industry than I realised at first.

Posted by Big Boss

Quoting Wings: It's a much bigger part of the industry than I realised at first.

It's the biggest part of the industry. Programmers take up the most percentage of a development team. These days, becoming a game designer at a company from scratch is almost impossible. The way to go about it, from stories of people that have made it today, from speakers from the industry that have come to my school and from former-delusional pursuers that thought all they needed was a game idea and an immense history of gameplaying, is to enter the industry with skills from a different ilk, such as a programmer or artist, and "work your way up" if you have the skills, vision, patience and creativity of a professional game designer (not the one that makes games in his basement for a living, or has a "team" of 15 people all over the world working for their "company" - all of them have been weeded out of the program's tough courses where I'm now, and enjoying a much easier degree in Digital Media. :)).

It sounds like I'm promoting programming, but I'm not. I see it as a tool to work my way up and become a game designer one day, but being a game engineer gives you the most insight on what's like to work in the industry, as far as testing what you're really made of in terms of dealing with a crazy schedule, sticking to deadlines and having the ability to quickly learn how to do something in a short time because the game or publisher demands it. It is the job with the most demand in the industry because it is the hardest to do.
