Dunno, never seen one before :/ but I did notice there are some Gamecube ports on it.
The port you're (probably) referring to is for the sensor bar you place next to your TV. It's what the controller uses to work out where it's pointing and how close it is.
Nintendo have confirmed that the thing on the right is in fact a pair of USB ports.
However, now I'm intrigued by the nondescript port above the video output...
Well, there is supposed to be that detection thing you place below your television screen. Perhaps that is where it connects to the system.

Ha, you didn't know about the USB ports? Nintendo announced that ages ago.
The odd port has been removed in recent photos. My guess is because the sensor bar is now wireless.
