Isn't it heartwarming to see someone with such a great designing mind sticking to his roots about gaming rather than filming? <3
Heh, I find that kinda ironic considering a lot of major series commonly associated with Sony follow the "games should be like movies" ideal, like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear and SK's Too Human.
Most developers do think like this guy, though. Hell, it's the reason Nintendo broke up with Silicon Knights.
If this is sarcasm, it is very well hidden.
No, they combine a HUD with too much cinematics. If I want a movie, I'll watch a movie.
That attention-getter made no sense. Even before he went on the whole movie-game tangent, I thought to myself that it would make more sense to compare these games to the movie industry lately than porn if you're going to mention loads of content and no creativity.
I agree with everything he said, though. I'm a little tired of games that are basically movies that let you walk from scene to scene inbetween cinematics with bad guys and maybe a few bosses in between. I do like the movie element sometimes, because there are few better ways to tell a story on-screen than in a movie style, but it should be first and foremost a game; it just takes careful balancing to get it right. Resident Evil IV, for instance, was very clever to create cut-scenes in which you must still sometimes reflexively press a button to dodge an attack.
So kudos to Jaffe.
Oops. When I say "FF" I mean "FFVIII." I didn't like any other Final Fantasies much.
I don't think the quality of the gameplay is even relevent. The games I mentioned still try to make their films like movies. I wasn't specifically referring to cut-scenes either.
While this is true, Jaffe loves Kojima because of the reason I mentioned. <3
