Videogames an art?

Posted by Drewboy64

Are they?
I say yes; look at Veo Lu Sluice in FF:CC. Beautiful.

Videogames can play on our emotions in countless ways, but like many arts, it's commercialism often defeats the purpose.

Good games are considered art forms. Games that are lackluster and haven't been put much effort into are not considered art in my view. Even games with high commercialism, like Madden games, are absolutely beautiful. God of War is beautiful. Ultimate Spider-Man is beautiful. Just because games are popular (lol never thought i'd say that), it doesn't take away from the true art value of it. Just because Picasso's art is reproduced and commercialized doesn't mean his art isn't art.

I classify anything that invokes a specific and intentional kind of reaction or emotion in the one experiencing it as art. All games invoke some kind of reaction on the player as intended by the creator. Thusly, games are art.

I voted yes. I think VGs can be an art sometimes. Making these cool 3D effects is,for me, an art ;)

So, people didn't hand-model each character in the Halo games?

I don't see your reasoning.

I think modern art is crap, but I won't deny it being actual art.

Maybe Moogs just thinks that not-so-great graphics equal bad art.

And that sluts and fags are the pinnacle of artistic character design.

I agree. Art is a medium put together in a way that expresses emotion or feeling for the creator and in turn, the audience. Games can scare you, game can alienate you, games can excite you, etc. Thats why I believe games CAN be art, not all games of course.

Posted by Speedfreak

No, all games are. Not all art invokes emotion or feeling, just some form of reaction. All games do this. Even Madden.

I dont think just by invoking a reaction can it be considered art. Doughnuts invoke rections too. I can't think of a specific title right now but there are definately a few that could never be art. This is, of course, just my opinion of what art is, everyones is a little different as is everyones opinion on whether games are art.

You do realize there's really no point in debating "what is art, what is not art", right? It's a subject that many philosophers brought up and they all had different opinions on what art is.

The best thing you can do is look at the definition and see what fits into it: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=art

The Mona Lisa invokes no emotion in me whatsoever, it's still art.

K updated definition.

A medium through which the artist or artists convey a message, emotion, metaphor, feeling or intended reaction to the audience. All games do this in some way, shape or form. Pong conveys a feeling of competitiveness, Zelda a feeling of exploring the unknown, Super Mario Bros a feeling of boundless energy and so on. A lot of people assume that the art in videogames is purely the graphical style used, the plot or the music. Games design itself is one of the best art mediums in the world because it's the only medium that can really create a geniune experience.

Games are THE art. No paintings involve you saving the world, or can give you the experience of putting hours into developing an intense story line. Games are dynamic. Every single part of the game together makes the art, and the good games are the most artistic things in existence, I believe.

What about the graphical art used to make the game?

Posted by Linko_16

There are games I'd say are not art at all (games like Bratz that are purly commercial), but Halo is not one of them. Halo's pretty deep, especially for a First Person Shooter.

Posted by Speedfreak

Even a game like Bratz is designed to get some kind of specific reaction out of the player, or make them feel a certain way whilst playing.

Posted by Linko_16

I do not deny this, but I fail to recognize any significance in any effort anyone made while creating the game to invoke feeling on the player, seeing as it's really just another way to advertise the toy line. Yeah, a real work of art.

Art's really what you call it. You can say Bratz is an art just because you feel emotion while you play the game; in that case, however, you can call anything in the world art, not to say someone couldn't do that either. I just prefer to be a little more choosy between what people put their soul into and what people did for a quick buck.

I do think Video Games are considered as an art form. Movies are an art form then why not Video games?

Posted by VirtualRealityZone

Video games are definetly considered as art. :D

Concept art, beginning development, coding, etc. all put together make beautiful...games....art....

I didn't say all art is good art. And yes, a crapload of things in this world could quite easily be considered art forms.
